Dec 04, 2018 Featured, From The Legislature Comments Off on N/Assembly Protest: ‘No alert, no sitting,’ NASS workers vow
The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has shut down the National Assembly complex over non payment of their salary and promotion arrears.
The protesting workers also told the leadership of the chambers that they would not allow any sitting by the legislators until they were paid the salaries they were being owed.
The workers are demanding the implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), which has been stopped since 2010.
According to the workers, the Salary and Wages Commission had approved the money and passed into law by the two chambers.
Also, they insisted that the money had been paid into National Assembly account but the management refused to pay them.
The workers while addressing the leadership of the National Assembly on Tuesday, vowed to only allow the lawmakers inside the chambers until they receive notifications from their individual banks acknowledging the payment of the money they are being owed.
The leadership of the National Assembly present includes, the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; as well as the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.
Saraki while trying to address the workers who are picketing the chambers in protest was rebuffed by the chanting, “No alert, no sitting!”
However, the workers were later asked to move to a hall where both sides could address the issues.
