Former member of the House of Representatives, Rotimi Makinde, is also known to be an actor. He lost his bid to return to the lower chamber of the National Assembly in the last general election. However, Makinde, well known within the entertainment industry, has come up with a new act; opening a new FM station in his native Ile-Ife, Osun, called Oodua FM. In this interview with Correspondent, OLAITAN OSOLA, Makinde explains how he lost re-election, his idea of a radio station and other issues. Excerpts:
In this exclusive interview with Nigeria Politics Online, Hon. Rotimi Makinde, a force in the entertainment industry and a successful politician, explained the reasons behind his failure to return to the green Chamber, idea behind his radio stations among other issues.
You were in the House of Representatives up till 2015, how did you fail to make it back to the Reps?
I was not just in the house between 2011 to 2015,I left my footprint, I happened to be the first Nollywood actor to be so privileged to serve in that capacity. Today, I feel proud and can stand tall to say I did my best in term of legislative duties.
The issue as to why I was not fortunate to be returned was not my making, I came from a very volatile community and predominant of then ruling party, most of the juggernauts of the party came from my constituency, namely FFK, Prof Ladipo, the Secretary of the acclaimed biggest party in Nigeria, Senator Omisore and others..I have all these people to contest with, not only with the enormous illegal funds available to them but with the rigid mind-set of the majority of our people that the Ifes deserved the governorship seat. Many of my people see me as the arrowhead and close lieutenant of Ogbeni Aregbesola and so, my election was seen as revenge for my committed role to support the governor I so much trust compared to my kinsman…. The rest is now history, I have no regret.
Do you still have your eyes on the House of Representatives or Senate or governorship seat of Osun?
Well, I live by the day and somehow leave my next line of action or ambition to God, I remained a very committed party man, in politics by call, I can honestly restate that I came into politics by call, I left a very lucrative job as a senior staff of NNPC and with 20 yes experience to politics that is full of uncertainty, I voluntarily retired my job and not sacked. This part of me was not well known, but that is the basic fact. I am not in politics to make money or fame but to serve my people. That I did not win the last election is not the end of the life, I shall remain in politics and would humbly submit myself to the will of God and to answer to that communal call of my people anytime.
Simply put, what is your future political ambition?
The post to seek in the nearest future also depends very much on God and my people…I see myself as the chief servant of Ife. I am qualified for any political post and ready to serve in any capacity as it may please God…My people are now wiser and I guess they can feel and compared my reign and that of the present “Methuselah” a man of 72 whom they mistakenly voted for. It is very sad, they will get opportunity to show him how they regretted him in future election, I don’t see him offering himself for any future election. I feel for my people I know they are daily regretting not returning me to the house, I lived with them and we interact daily, so I can see much regrets in the land.
The party you belong to, APC, has some issues now; do you think the APC can still be attractive to Nigerians as it did in 2015?
Only an over ambitious politician would be talking of 2019 election in 2016,God is the deciding factor and to him I shall leave my next line of action but certainly I shall humbly offer myself to serve my people anytime and any day. Be it House of Rep’s, senate or governor, I am qualified.
It an open secret that APC is not in the best form at this moment but this is not to say that, they will go down with this teething problems, I want to believe they will come out of it and resolve the matters..it is not palatable news at all, our leaders are not united, they are finding it difficult to manage success, the fortunate ones are full of egos and forgetting the past so easy, well, I guess it is because we are mostly strangers on the same rescue boat, we hurriedly came together because we have a common enemy and without terms and conditions. These crises are making nonsense of the like of me who is feeling neglected already…we don’t even know whom to turn to. It is very bad, this is a party that many of us nearly lost our lives, I was the first to climbed mass gate in our attempt to protect the biggest catch to our party, here I am, watching from far how those I toasted to this party on the floor of the house been considered better than I do…This and many others are lessons of life!
Nevertheless, I believe Nigeria deserved the change the party gave them, our party came at a very good time to rescued this nation from the gripping and corrupt hands of the PDP, and only God know what would have happened should this disgruntled PDP remained in power till now. So on whether if at future election and if APC my party would fly I would say yes, only an insane, short sighted and corrupt Nigerians would vote for PDP again in this country, never and God forbid.PDP is a dead party.
As an actor, how do you combine being in politics with acting
There is no big deal been an actor and politician, they are both interwoven, Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger in USA was also an actor before he became a governor in California, we are all political animal and acting is a way of life..
What are your plans in the entertainment world?
While in the house, I did myself for my colleagues in Nollywood, my contribution was not in small measure to the 3 Billion Naira granted and lot of plans but the non unity existing in the industry is not helping.
Sir, can you share with us, what informed the idea of a radio station?
Venturing and diversifying into broadcasting business is another way to register my love in entertainment industry, I have always love channels to bring awareness closer to my people, I have always live to change the face of information and making life meaningful and I believe broadcasting will help in no small measure.
Why did you name it Oodua FM?
Oodua is a name that unites the Yoruba’s,the name was carefully chosen with serious intention to champion to use the platform to promote unity across the land…oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba’s is known to spread his tentacles beyond the soil of ife and that we shall endeavor to do with us using his identity..
Why is it located in Osun and not Lagos?
We are presently located in Ife and operating in Ife, the cradle of Yoruba race but I want to assure you all we shall ensure we never sleep until we reach out to hooks and corner’s of Yoruba land.
Don’t you think the chances of commercial success is greater in Lagos than Osun?
Making money in life should be secondary, making life meaningful and better for our society should be our priority, if I so think of money, I would not set up this station in Ife, I love my people, I see this little effort as my contribution to lift a little burden off the teeming unemployment rate in Ife lands.

What are those factors giving you confidence that the station will break even in Osun?
I have absolute confidence and considering my status as entertainment person,I would endeavor to make sure Oodua FM is that radio station they’re waiting for, first and foremost, its not politically motivated and we shall tolerate opposition and opposing views..
