The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned Foreign governments funding the forthcoming elections to steer off the country’s internal affairs.
According to the Ministry, helping to fund Nigeria’s elections by some foreign governments does not give them the right of undue interference or make unguarded comments about its internal affairs.
This is coming following different reactions that greeted President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.
The ministry said this in a statement which was also directed at the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union which have all faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision.
The statement read in part, “It is insulting for any foreign representative to claim the right to interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs based on the premise that its government has invested heavily in the election.
“Nigeria has invested enormously, over the years, in election processes of many African countries and will continue to do so without interfering in their internal affairs. Interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs under any guise will therefore not be accepted.”
